How to Protect Yourself from Trolls on Instagram

How to Protect Yourself from Trolls on Instagram

With over 500 million users already, Instagram’s popularity continues to grow. As it grows, so does the troll population. Trolls are there to hijack the conversation and feed off of the negativity that results. Fight back by following some simple suggestions.

You can block users or moderate your comments. Instagram allows you to use keyword filters to automatically remove some content. Be aware that when you block someone, that person won’t be able to find your profile, posts or story on Instagram. People aren’t notified when you block them. Blocking a user will not delete their comments. You will still need to delete their comments from your posts.

To fully block a user:

  1. Tap their username to go to their profile
  2. Tap  (iPhone/iPad) or  (Android) in the top right
  3. Tap Block

Filter Out Comments by Keyword

Comments that may be inappropriate, offensive or bullying are automatically filtered out from your posts and live videos. Comments are filtered automatically by default, but you can always change this setting:

  1. Go to your profile and tap  (iPhone) or  (Android) in the top right
  2. Tap Comment Controls
  3. Tap next to Hide Offensive Comments to turn it on

If you have the offensive comment filter turned on, you can also turn on a keyword filter to hide comments that contain specific words, phrases, numbers or emoji that you’d like to avoid.

  1. Go to your profile and tap  (iPhone) or  (Android) in the top right
  2. Tap Comment Controls
  3. Make sure that Hide Offensive Comments is turned on
  4. Tap next to Enable Keyword Filters to turn it on

Enter specific words, phrases, numbers or emoji in the text box to filter out comments.

Keep in mind that default and custom keyword filtering aren’t currently available in all languages:

  • Default Keywords: The default list of keywords is only available in certain languages
  • Custom Keywords: Currently, custom keyword filtering doesn’t support languages without spaces (ex: Chinese, Japanese, Thai)

When you turn on comment filtering, it’s applied to both new and existing comments on your posts. When you turn off comment filtering, filtered comments on your posts will be restored.
